What you'll do

Explore the thoroughfares of the town centre with me to see how the heartlanders socialise and lead their everyday lives. As I am native to the estate, you will benefit from my explanations and perspective of the sights and sounds you will witness. Enjoy a sampling of local food and beverage at a kopitiam, the traditional coffee shop for Singaporeans. I will introduce you dishes that are unique to the Singaporean tastebud, and order them from the friendly hawkers - something which visitors may find it difficult to do on their own. Get yourself immersed in this experience with a local, like a local! Lastly, do you know that more than 80% of Singapore's population live in public housing? Follow me and learn about the country's public housing history and policies at the gallery of the HDB Hub, the headquarters of the public housing authority.

I grew up in the quintessential heartland of Singapore - Toa Payoh. I still live in this estate. As a proud Toa Payoh native, it never fails to excite me to introduce my hometown to visitors from everywhere in the world, for them to witness how the locals work, live, and play. I am a licensed tourist guide and a member of the Singapore Heritage Society.

Where you'll be

We will meet at the passenger service counter of Toa Payoh MRT before exploring the shopping and eating thoroughfares of the town centre. We will then have a sampling of the food that locals eat at a kopitiam, and end the tour with an informative and visual learning experience at the gallery of the HDB Hub. This is a 60% outdoor / 40% indoor walking tour, and be prepared to be on your feet most of the time except when eating at the kopitiam.
