What you'll do
We will meet at 9 AM at the Hout Bay harbor entrance or the more picturesque Kalk Bay Harbour. Then we'll walk around the harbor, where I'll help you select your photographic subject and guide you in composing your image in the camera. The idea is to use your own equipment effectively and learn about composition, shutter speed, and aperture to achieve better results with your pictures. Afterwards, over a cup of coffee, we'll discuss the images you shot. I was brought up in the Cape Peninsula, and was a keen fisherman—in fact, I'm still always happy to put a line in the water. I know many of the fish species that the boats bring home. Many of the old colorful wooden boats still use hand-lines for fishing. There are also fleets of crayfish boats with their colourful cages, as well as deep-sea trawlers. They all combine to create never-ending diaspora of photographic subjects. We aim to have a fun time, a visual experience and bit of photographic eduction all together. I prefer to keep the groups small (4-6 people) if possible. If you have preferential place you'd like to photograph, we can chat about it.
I was an advertising creative director. Sold the business. I began shooting my own stuff and changed direction — now I sell globally to stock photography libraries and do bespoke assignments. Specialise in industrial images but also do many other forms of the art. I'm also an avid fisherman, so I know what we'll see, at the fish market. I always find the colourful wooden fishing boats with their local character (and characters), interesting. Every time it's different, as the light and weather change. It makes for exciting subject-matter. I want this to be a fun time where you leave knowing a bit more than when you arrived. Learn about composition, shutter speed and aperture
Coffee after the shoot We can take a few minutes to look at your pics and do a short crit.
Use your own camera The idea is to allow you to use your own equipment - effectively. Learn about composition, shutter speed,…
Where you'll be
I grew up in the area. Spent my youth fishing off the harbour wall at Kalk Bay and travelled to Hout Bay with my parents to buy crayfish for Sunday night supper. I've owned and fished from ski-boats and still keep my hand in. We'll see and enjoy access to unlimited subject matter. Locals preparing for sea, or return from the deep to offload. Among all this activity, local characters are happy to pose (for small change).
