What you'll do
We'll meet for a cup of coffee or tea, then take a leisurely stroll to the Eerste River, where you will learn how to create a small piece of "land art" using natural items found in the area. Land art is a movement that uses the natural landscape to create site-specific art and sculptures. It is not necessarily sustainable, as it is degraded by the elements of wind, rain, and so on. This artwork is recorded by photography. After enjoying our picnic lunches under the oaks, we'll cross the river on a swinging bridge and climb the mountain along a path. Here, we will immerse ourselves in nature, creating unusual pieces of land art on the mountainside. We'll create our artwork using natural, organic materials found in the area—branches, twigs, rocks, leaves, logs, seeds, and so on. The artwork may vary from creating interesting patterns in the soil to using stones or driftwood to create interesting designs, for example. This process allows you to connect with the land, explore and play with nature, and learn about the plants from an expert. Both of your hosts will assist with inspiring you to create your final piece—either in a group or individually.
I am a local artist, guide, horticulturist, and landscaper operating a local landscaping company called Elainscape. My colleague, Anton, is an artist and nephew of the well-known artist and poet, Breyten Breytenbach. We are excited about offering this unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience to create land art on the mountains of Stellenbosch. We are both members of a local land-art group. I went to school in Stellenbosch, and have lived in the area most of my life. I am passionate about nature and our flora and fauna. I also operate an ecotourism company called ElainsCape Eco Tours.

Where you'll be
We'll meet for a cup of coffee or tea at a local café—a stone's throw from the historic Lanzerac Hotel. After a leisurely stroll to the Eerste river, we'll create a small piece of artwork along the river, and enjoy a picnic under the oaks. Later, once we have the hang of creating land art, we'll climb the mountain and continue creating our final masterpieces on the Stellenbosch mountainside. We'll take photos to capture our pieces for posterity.
