What you'll do

Explore Old San Juan’s architecture with a local architect.

We will be exploring the 500 year old walled city of Old San Juan, discovering secret corners and little-known spots full of charm and steeped in history, that remain unnoticed to the casual visitor. As we walk through Old San Juan’s blue cobblestoned streets, accompanied by a knowledgeable local architect, we'll be learning about how the city was built in this rocky island jutting out to the sea, observing the urban layout, constructive methods and architectural details of the Spanish colonial buildings and defensive structures. In this 2 hour stroll you'll experience historical architecture with an insider, not just as a tourist, since we will be visiting private residences and places with limited access. You'll have a chance to peer into dungeons, wonder at frescoed chapels, and climb rooftops to explore hidden towers, basque in secluded Spanish patios, and learn about the fascinating historical characters and events that shaped the city, as we delve into the mysteries of this quintessential Spanish Caribbean stronghold.

Through my work as an architect, I've come to appreciate the fine classical tradition in many of Puerto Rico’s historic buildings, in the layout of its towns, and the clever design of its old homes. The quality and rich detail of our small island’s historic architecture, which spans across 500 years of history is impressive. Concerned by how little known our architectural heritage is to outside visitors and even to the locals, in 2011, I founded a nonprofit, volunteer-based institution focused on educating the public about Puerto Rico’s spectacular historical environment.

100% recommend this tour! Very thorough and thoughtful - we didn’t spend all our time outside and got the chance to go into air conditioned spaces which was very appreciated. Definitely a highlight of our trip!

We met Andy at 10am today and we were in a group of about 14 people. It was a beautiful and grew hotter as the day went on. We frequently went in and out of local establishments and up stairs as well to find ourselves learning about san juan history related to architecture and symbolism. Andy was great and friendly. Everything went smoothly. He was also kind enough to hand out his list of favorite places and we hit up two of them (Cinema Bar and Deaverdura Restaurant). Great experience. Would highly recommend.

Such a wonderful part of our trip! Andy was fantastic and we learned so much and got to see so many beautiful spots we would have missed otherwise. My husband and I had our two kids (4&1) with us, and while it can of course make things a little more challenging, Andy and the rest of the group were so warm and welcoming. For the majority of the tour our one year old fell asleep, the four year old joined right in and fully participated and loved talking to Andy and the other guests, even as a young kid she had a wonderful time. Andy also made sure to give everyone great suggestions for place to go for the rest of their trips. Would highly highly recommend adding this to anyone’s trip!

Awesome experience, exceeded my expectations! My husband and I are locals and have been to old San Juan many times, but we had never seen the city from the beautiful historic perspective of why and how the buildings came to be. Andy was very knowledgeable about the historic intricacies of every architectural detail, and after the tour we will never look old San Juan the same. I recommend this tour to locals and tourists alike.
