What you'll do

We will assemble in the spectacular main entrance hall of the Fitzwilliam Museum and after a brief background into the history and development of the museum, we will go upstairs into the painting galleries and take in defining works from:  The Italian Renaissance and Baroque,  Flanders and Holland,  Tudor, Stuart, Georgian and Victorian Britain  The French Impressionists  British Art of the early Twentieth Century. During this journey you will encounter works by Veneziano, Botticini, Titian, Canaletto, El Greco, Rubens, Brueghel, Hogarth, Gainsborough, Millais, Monet, Renoir and more. This format can easily be customised for those who would like to look at particular areas of interest in greater depth. I will use a more ‘art-historical’ approach – however, no prior knowledge is assumed nor required. While it is true that visitors will see less of the collection as a whole they will be able to get deeper ‘under the skin’ of the chosen works. As well as paintings, the Fitzwilliam Museum has an excellent collection of artefacts from Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and beyond. I can easily put together a tour for visitors who would prefer to look at and talk about these objects and art from antiquity. I MAY WELL BE ABLE TO DO TOURS ON DATES OTHER THAN THOSE ON THE CLANDAR. PLEASE CONTACT ME TO SEE IF I AM AVAILABLE WHEN YOU ARE IN CAMBRIDGE

Philip

Philip Stephenson: Museum Educator I have been involved in museum and gallery education and engagement in one capacity or another since 1985. Initially as an advisory teacher for Cambridgeshire Local Education Authority and latterly as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education. I am also a Fellow of Homerton College. The vast majority of this work has been in the Fitzwilliam Museum and has meant I have developed a wide ranging and in-depth knowledge of the collection. More importantly, it has engendered an enthusiasm and a passion for the works on display that I hope will be evident from my approach to guiding visitors. I continue to maintain my own knowledge and understanding of the subject through courses at City Lit College in Holborn, and the National Gallery.

Where you'll be

We will meet in the grand Main Entrance Hall that looks like a Greek temple with stone steps leading up to the revolving door. The distinctive sight of four statues of lions will tell you that it's the right place! The Fitzwilliam Experience takes place entirely within the museum. As the 'What We'll Do' section suggests, we will be visiting a wide range of gallery spaces.
