What you'll do

Through this walk, we share our experiences and broaden what it means to be a tourist in Oaxaca. We have found the richest ways to experience places and expressions of culture that may go unnoticed or only seen at face value. We give insight into the deeper meaning of the history, legends, and traditions that are foundational to Oaxacan daily life. Our tour will be based around the four church which founded the limits of Oaxaca City: Santo Domingo, La Soledad, La Merced, and Zocalo. We call this walk the Brújula Tour because of the configuration of these churches being in the shape of a compass. Along the way, we will share traditions, ways of life in present-day Oaxaca, and urban legends that have haunted Oaxacan's for decades. The walk will take place around dusk to enhance the feeling that you are part of the stories. The activity aims to lay out the city and discovers how they were changing or reinforcing customs as buildings and streets were built. Participants may have thoughtful comments at the 4 main stops. We take advantage of the journey between them to stop to observe old and new buildings and aspects of the street and the way they relate.

Verónica

I am a cultural curator and my partner has her degree in political science. We have spent time investigating the culture of Oaxaca as well as having lived our daily lives in the city of Oaxaca for over a year. I have been a tour guide for a year, taking people to different mezcal palenques and explaining the process involved. At the same time, I have been working on a cultural platform to understand alternative perspectives, the development of Oaxacan culture, and how the past has influenced modern life in Oaxaca. My partner has worked on multiple political campaigns as an event organizer. She also has worked with different disenfranchised groups in multiple countries where she has studied. We both started off as tourists but now have gained the knowledge of locals from living here.
