What you'll do
Damira hails from Samarkand, the crossroads of East and West, and a city whose inhabitants are known for their warm and generous hospitality. You’ll appreciate this reputation as soon as Damira welcomes you into her home with a hot cup of green tea and an assortment of homemade traditional snacks, which could include pastries filled with meat and vegetables, freshly baked cinnamon or lemon cakes, and dried fruit from Uzbekistan. Damira’s love of history and storytelling will shine as she teaches you to use traditional Uzbek cooking tools and explains the origins of her rustic, flavorful dishes. A retired cardiologist, Damira will also share the health benefits of the fresh herbs, vegetables, and spices that color her cooking. An occasional numerologist and tarot card enthusiast, Damira might even tell your fortune. During your workshop, Damira will teach you how to make mashhurda (a comforting, home-style mung bean and vegetable soup), pumpkin sambusa (a baked triangular pie filled with cumin-scented butternut squash), and radish salad (a cold radish, yogurt, and garlic salad tossed with dill and cilantro). You’ll leave Damira’s home inspired to share her stories and cook her food, which we’ll make easy with a packet of Damina’s family recipes and a shopping guide to her favorite markets.
I'm the founder of the League of Kitchens, a culinary dream-team of women who welcome you into their homes, teach family recipes, and inspire you with personal stories. Damira is your host for this experience. Originally from Samarkand, an ancient city that lies on the Silk Road, she loved growing up in such a diverse country where she learned to cook from her mother and grandmother. Damira and her husband left Uzbekistan in 2013 to be closer to their children, who were living in America, and to do something new—Damira believes it’s always important to try new things. A cardiologist in Uzbekistan, she’s now doing what she loves most: hosting friends for home-cooked meals. In May 2018, Damira cooked the first-ever Uzbek (and first Halal) dinner at the James Beard House, and she has been featured in Eater, Brooklyn Magazine, and Quartz.

Where you'll be
This workshop will take place in Damina’s home in Borough Park, Brooklyn. This large neighborhood is a great place to explore after your workshop. We particularly recommend visiting Young Israel Beth El of Boro Park, the neighborhood’s oldest synagogue, or exploring all the Hasidic shops and vendors that line 13th Avenue.
