What you'll do

Please note that ALL International travellers will have to isolate & quarantine for 14 days before attending this experience according to current Irish Law. Please do not book if you cannot quarantine.

This is a more hands on demonstration for a guest. Due to the complexity and skill required to turn one of my Hanging Ornaments, I will turn the decoration from a wood blank into it's final shape in two stages. You will each sand, seal, wax embellish and finish the piece to your own specifications to take home with you.

In order for you to be able to do these stages yourself, I will demonstrate how to:
Fully sand the piece so that you will be able to sand on your own.
Add colour to the piece with whatever colours you choose (10 colours to choose from)
Embellish the grain with gold wax
Apply the overcoat of High Gloss to make it shine.
Add the hook eye to the top of the ornamnent.
Add the ribbon, which you will choose for yourself.

Some of these steps are quite difficult so if at any stage if you cannot complete a step I will help you or do it for you.

In the last few years I have become very well known for my Hanging Ornament decorations & they have moved on from the earlier natural grain versions to a mixture of colour and natural grain. As far as I know I am the only Woodturner in the world making this type of ornament. I think that makes this tour fairly special.
Other things to note
Please wear clothes that can get dusty or dirty. The colours that you will be using can stain clothing and will probably not wash off certain materials. The colours will stain your skin for a few days too but I can provide gloves that will be effective in preventing that.

I am a member of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland and the Original Kerry Craft group. I have been turning since 1996 and became a professional in 2015.

I specialize in rescuing fallen Irish Hardwood, then processing it into rough form for drying and then finishing it as something beautiful with a unique story.

My style of turning suits my personality. I get bored of repetition and I like to go with the flow. When I see an interesting grain pattern emerge on the lathe I try to feature it as much as possible. I don't like using guides or templates.

Teaching is the next logical progression for me. It took years for me to hone my craft and that is something that can be shared and passed on. I also like to talk about the importance of responsible and sustainable hardwood tree management.

Where you'll be

Most of this tour will be conducted in my main workshop but I may be able to give you a brief tour of my other workshop, kilns and woodstores at the end if there is time. There may also be an opportunity to look at some of my finished pieces.

David made the experience very special for my parents and I. He walked us through his collection of work and a brief background about general woodwork. Very approachable and patient with all our questions. David is also a clear educator, teaching us step by step, explaining how and why we needed to do things in specific ways. At the same time he gave us space to explore and be creative in creating our little piece of ornament. He didn't rush us in any way and was very generous with his time, despite being busy with lots of projects awaiting. David definitely has much passion and respect for the work he does. I could go on and on, but all in all, this was an experience unforgettable :) I highly recommend everyone to experience this activity!
