What you'll do
Just in time for 'Herbst' (Autumn), my tour highlights some of Berlin's best places to be for both the living and the dead. There is nothing more normal in Berlin than to sit for the afternoon Kaffee & Kuchen in the neighborhood cemeteries cafes in order to relax and unwind or to meet friends. In one or two stops we'll have a tasting of cake and the chance to have some pretty well-roasted and well-considered coffee. In fact, cemetery cafes are some of the most relaxing and fashionable places to be. We'll visit four of Berlin's cemeteries in three or four of Berlin's neighborhoods (Schoneberg, Kreuzberg, Mitte and Neukolln) try the coffee and cake in each one and visit a few notable graves at each stop.
I have lived in Berlin since 2011 and have been visiting the city regularly since 2004. I have worked in tourism in Vegas, as a museum guide in New York, and as an artist and teacher in Paris and Berlin. I am a long time 'randonneuse' with a lifetime spent exploring the cities I haved live in on foot. I am also a trained and avid storyteller with a love of German and French culture and history -- particularly of the 20th century. I have been leading tours in Berlin for the last year professionally. I love of finding new places, tasting new foods and having new experiences in this dynamic, sometimes mysterious city which I know like the back of my hand and have mapped with the soles of my feet. The neighborhoods we explore in this tour are the neighborhoods I have lived and worked in and call home.
I will get us a tasting of cake at two of the stops
Where you'll be
We start at the cemetery that is the home to the Brother's Grimm, at the Alter St.-Matthäus-Kirchhof at the border of Schöneberg and then cross over to the otherside of Kreuzberg through the woods of Viktoria Park to the next resting place for our first solid bite of cemetery cake and dark roasted coffee. We'll cut through the Hasenheide to the cemeterys of the Hipsters in Neukolln for some treates and end at the grave of Brecht in Mitte.
