What you'll do
Upon arrival at the Kona Kai Resort, you will be greeted by the valet parking attendants who will take care of your car and direct you to our office. The experience begins in our office with an America's Cup history presentation plus details of Stars & Stripes USA-11. We board the boat on time, offer storage for bags and backpack, conduct a safety briefing and answer any questions. As we motor out to the main channel to raise the sails, those guests that are interested, will be given directions on how to grind the winches to help raise and trim the sails. The captain turns the boat into the wind so the guests can grind the winches to help raise the mainsail. The crew then jumps the halyard to hoist the headsail. We turn away to catch the wind and take off down the bay toward downtown. Each guest is then given the opportunity to drive the boat, grind the winches, or just hang on and enjoy the beautiful scenery of San Diego Bay. We maneuver frequently to keep the speed up and give the guests the full experience of sailing on an authentic America's Cup racing yacht. A photographer takes photos and videos of all the action on board. After an exhilarating sail, we return to the dock and immediately upload the photos for viewing in our office while enjoying complimentary refreshments. The photos are uploaded overnight with a link sent for free viewing and downloads.
As captain and co-owner of the authentic America's Cup racing yacht, Stars & Stripes USA-11, it has been my honor and pleasure to share this unique sailing experience with the average person on beautiful San Diego Bay for over 13 years. My sailing experience goes back over 35 years and my first Coast Guard license was obtained in 1987. Since sailing an America's Cup racing yacht requires a half dozen experienced crew members, we have been very fortunate to have developed a solid crew with over 100 years combined experience on America's Cup racing yachts.
Where you'll be
The experience will begin as we motor out the channel just beneath Pt. Loma and past the docks used by the Navy's mammal training program. We raise the sails just off North Island Naval Air Station and then we take off in the direction for best wind conditions. Frequently this takes us downtown toward the embarcadero past the Maritime Museum, the Midway and cruise ships. We then tack back up the bay finishing near the Navy submarine base.
