What you'll do

Step back in time and commune with the creatures living amongst an ancient coastal redwood forest. As we quiet the mind and open our senses, we’ll tune in to the hidden wildlife around us and from deep within. We'll begin with a grounding meditation to bring us into present awareness. We’ll learn the steps to develop our practice of mindful listening and sensory observation to add depth and dimension to our inner and outer experience. We’ll learn about the distinctive habitats and microclimates within the park that are home to a range of native wildlife. As we begin our silent moving meditation, we’ll notice the relationships between the animals and the environments they’re part of, and reflect on the balance that exists between the animals and their environment. We’ll learn how to be in respectful relationship with the banana slugs living amongst the shade-loving undergrowth. We'll cast our eyes upward to the animals who live in the fern mats, like the endangered wandering salamander, who spends its entire life at the top of the tallest trees in the world. In the canopy we’ll look for red tailed hawks, acorn woodpeckers, and Steller’s Jays. We’ll end with closing reflections about what we experienced and how we’d like integrate insights from the day. This experience is part of “Creatures of the Lost,” an exclusive series from Lost in Forestville and AirBnB Experiences.

Learn more about Erika

Erika

I am an artist, writer, and mindfulness practitioner who cares about helping others slow down and form meaningful relationships with the natural world around them. I grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and the Huron National Forest of Michigan, spending my early years connecting to nature as a scout, camp counselor, and park steward. My last 14 years were spent living a double life in San Francisco. In one life, I worked as a creative director in the tech industry making award-winning educational games, wellness and mindfulness products. In the other life, I tended secret rooftop honey bee colonies, took inner-city kids on wilderness adventures with the Sierra Club, and silent retreat in animal sanctuaries. I now live in Forestville amongst the sacred redwoods, writing about mindfulness, interconnectivity, and stewardship.

Located deep in Sonoma County on the Russian River, Armstrong Redwoods SNR is 2 hours from San Francisco, 1 hour from Sonoma, and 30 minutes from Healdsburg.
