What you'll do

Syngrou avenue became almost notorious through the years, because it was known as the most kinky place of Athens, kind of the Red Light District of the city. Today it is what could be described as the “Cultural Avenue of Athens”. A link between old sights and new emblematic spots of the city. Syngrou Avenue connects the Acropolis and the region of Plaka, with monuments of modern urban life, such as the Fix Beer Factory -that has been now turned into the new National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST) that in 2017 hosted the famous Documenta 14 exhibition-, the Panteion University of Social and Political Science (visitable), the traditional yet trendy neighborhood of Koukaki, and the two private Cultural Centers, Onassis Stegi (visitable) and Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (visitable), named after the two great Greek ship owners, who were friends and rivals in the field of profit as well as in the field of women. Let’s explore together this strange Avenue and hear the stories around the notorious businessman, Syggros, after whom the Avenue was named, a dark figure of the 19th century. And all the stories of the avenue’s landmarks, like the place where a king was almost assassinated. And, of course, we will have the chance to see some small remnants of the streets old kinky character. Let’s share this experience of urban tourism!

George

We are George, Stavros and Katerina, a group of local young social scientists. We have always been thrilled by the way that our everyday walks in the cities of Athens take us so close to landmarks of our city's contemporary history. This exact sentiment we want to pass to the people who visit Athens, to help them realize that the city has far more to show than its ancient heritage. We created this project also in order to finance our PhD studies and to organize scientific congresses on the contemporary democratic history of Greek people and the relationship between cities’ structures and social procedures.
