What you'll do
This is a rather unique tour, visiting places tourists never see, and which locals would never mention. This tour covers the most sordid places infamous in Tokyo's history, which makes it all the more interesting. The tour begins at Yaesu Central Exit of Tokyo Station, where we will meet at 9am on weekends, and 10am on weekdays (to allow for the morning rush hour). We will commute by subway to Minami Senju Station. From there, we will walk toward Asakusa via Senzoku, passing though what was once known as the Yoshiwara, the famous "red light" district of old Tokyo. We will take a break for lunch in this area. You can bring your own lunch, or you can buy something along the way, there are numerous places to find a good meal. We will approach Asakusa along the Sumida River, and enter through the Kanamarimon gate. Inside the gate are numerous souvenir shops, stores, snack restaurants, followed by the Sensoji Temple. We will spend the rest of the day in the vicinity, including the parts of the district seldom visited by tourists. We will return to Tokyo Station via the subway.
I have lived in Tokyo for more than 10 years, and have worked in different districts of the city during that time. I am in the commercial photography business, and am also a contributor of travel information to several international publications and news agencies. I have spent much of my working and free time exploring the city, and have discovered countless interesting places. I have also studied the history of the city, and know the background of the different historical and not-so-historical sites. I am familiar with the specialities of the city's different districts; the products, foods, and festivals, things which make each part of the city unique.
