“Himalayan Woodpecker -- A land in paradise. I was having a lot of expectations after I booked it, because of the reviews as nothing can be so close to perfect, right! But this damn stay is. This has been the perfect abode I could have ever asked for. I am so grateful to Rajendra and his family for such an unexpected welcome and pampering all through out my stay. Rajendra's wife is an amazing cook, she cook'ed the best of chicken and paneer I could have ever asked for amidst the shivering -1 degree cold. Rajendra's father was very gracious to help us with the fireplace. He watched us coming in and waited for the moment to ask for tea, and I felt like no less than home away from home. I can't rate the experience I had. His gesture is priceless. If you are looking for a break from the city life, and want to sit in the balcony under the shimmering sun, surrounded by ice capped mountains, listening to the rushing beas and the musing chirps of unknown beautiful birds, please make your self lucky to get a reservation at his place. You ll damn not regret. P.S. Month of Visit - March”
This small stand alone house is quiet and secluded, hidden in the middle of an apple orchard. From your bedroom window, you can see the mountains laid out in front of you, with orchards on one side and large coniferous forest on the other. (It's also only 200m from the road.) The house consists of one very large sunlit room with a king size bed, a spacious and well equipped alcove kitchen, a big bathroom with a geyser/water heater. Outside, there is a balcony to relax and unwind.
“This review has a very special incident attached to it. I really applaud Hukum’s openness and his transparent communication. We booked his place in Manali which was the perfect escape from the buzz of traffic and pollution in Bangalore. The entire trip was to take a halt in Manali for couple of days and then drive my bike to Leh along with my travel partner. Along the same timeline of my journey, Manali was receiving the highest amount of rain in last 70 years, causing lot of landslides and damage to the roads. We were stuck at Delhi during this time, as buses to Manali were stopped. Hukum was guiding us and was in constant touch the entire time. After waiting for around 3 days in Delhi, we came to know that Rohtang pass is blocked and might take few days, to completely clear off. With a very heavy heart, we had to reroute our journey to Leh, via flight from Delhi. The Manali stay had to be cancelled although, we were in the middle of our booking. The rest of the process to cancel the booking due to natural calamity was a breeze and Hukum was really considerate to give us full refund. I would be visiting his place for sure next time we plan for Manali.”
The only way to get to this unique property is 50 MINUTE WALK UP A STEEP MOUNTAIN PATH through apple orchards and past waterfalls. Ideal for people that love nature, walking and want to be surrounded by beauty. There are no roads! sleeps 1 - 4 people comfortable. The apartment is designed for 2 people however 2 extra beds can be put into the dinning room which doubles up as the second bedroom.
“This holiday turned out so much better than my family & I planned, and we’ve all got big smiles on our faces as we write this review :-) Communication-wise, Ashima & Scott were very responsive, both before & during our stay, patiently answered our many questions with tremendous detail The place itself is gorgeous, the location is unreal, with the house nestled in the midst of apple orchards, surrounded by snow capped peaks and clouds! Be warned though - the 40-minute trek up from Vashist is not for the faint of heart, but the spectacular views & the serenity of it all - away from the touristy hustle/bustle - makes it all worth it. And we’ve definitely come out fitter from it :-) Every morning we’d open up the windows to get our daily dose of mountains freshly dusted with snow! The house is quite quaint, and tastefully done up, with a lot of modern amenities including a hot water connection to the kitchen - which is quite a boon when washing dishes during the early winter that set in. Scott was uber helpful with treks that we could undertake, even drawing us detailed maps & fixing us up with a local guide which worked out quite well. In many other areas, he provided useful advise & was helpful too! One of the highlights of the trip were the 3 dogs - Pasta, Diju & Mr. Mo - who kept us company both at the house, and during some of our arduous treks - which to them appeared to be a piece of cake! Tips : — The golden apples are the best, try them with a dash of salt & chilli powder for that extra oomph. — The German Bakery & the provision store, both near Vashist temple, are great places to load up on pastries/coffee & daily groceries respectively.”
